“In a silhouette there is only one line, no motion, no light, no colour, no height, no depth, no eye, no ear, no nostril, no cheek, only a very little part of the lip - and in spite of it, how decisively significant it is…” Johann Caspar Larater (1741-1801) scientist, theorist and authority on physiognomy.
I paint figuratively in oils or acrylic on canvas, sometimes in colour, often in black and white. My paintings focus on children significant to my life, portrayed as silhouettes and shadows.
I aim for a formal simplicity by removing detail and personalising features, yet still evoking character and attitude: the viewer’s imagination stimulated by pose, posture and occasional hints of the figure’s situation. By focussing on the strength of form and outline, I hope to create dramatic and bold structural shapes, which capture glimpses of childhood: children at play, relaxed and full of fun.
NB: I am happy to take commissions: I have recently begun a life-size painting, 6’ x 5’, of the silhouette of a client’s three children.
